Crystal does not work, what is the possible problem

Hi, dialog,

In our custom board, we use NX2520SA as the 16MHz crystal and ABS06 as 32kHz crystal, but both of the crystals are not working.
1. We noticed that in the development board, the crystals are connected to DA14580 without any capacitors, but in our case, we had connected 16MHz crystal to DA14580 with a 8pF capacitor on each XTAL pin. could this be the problem? ps: we tried to remove the capacitors and connect the crystal to the DA14580 directly, but it still failed to work.
2. Another thing, due to our careless minds, we missed to put vias around crystals, could this be the reason for such a failure?

Thanks!

Hi wenkangl,

Hi wenkangl,

What do you mean that the XTALs are not working ? Can you be more specific ?

1. Since by removing the capacitors didn't change anything this isn't your problem, although the recommended connections require no capacitors on the XTAL connections, so please follow the specifications that dialog provides.

2. Also i dont think that the non existaning vias around the crystal would result in a tottaly dead device, the vias are there to prevent interfierences towards the crystal. So it should provide clock to the device in order to boot but not consistent enough in order to use the radio properly or any peripheral that requires an accurate clock, your UART for example.

I would suggest to check your supply and you can always have a look at the AN-B-009 document DA14580 Crystal oscillator PCB layout guidelines.
