I've changed the value of app_default_sleep_mode into ARCH_EXT_SLEEP_ON. This is the only change I need to do to get the module into extended sleep, right? Still the module doesn't seem to be sleeping (verified using a DSO). The systick timer, which is said to be non functional during sleep is working fine too. What am I missing in the code?

Try to follow the Tutorial 5 : configuring sleep mode on DA1458x in order to measure the power consumption of the 580, besides that there is no need for any other configuration unless you cancel sleep dynamically anywhere in your code. Try to download an example from the SDK and also in case you download the fw via keil try to download via UART instead and measure once more.

How do I download the fw through UART and what difference does it make w.r.t code execution?

You can use the Smart Snippets tool and download the .hex file from the Uart booter tool (Booter option on Smart Snippets). Normally there should be no difference between downloading the fw from JTAG and UART but due to some Jlink driver compabilities and Keil the debugger stays attached to the 580 and consumes extra power.
